This course will examine various economic and social causes and
consequences of population change, and it will explore an array of
business implications of demographic structure and dynamics. In it we
will study the economic impact of immigrants on U.S. workers and
taxpayers, the growing pension burden as populations age, the effect of
population growth on economic growth, and the environmental
consequences of population growth. We will discuss the economics of
aging, life-cycle patterns of consumption and saving, and the
implications for products and services purchased by specific age
groups. The course will also examine the economic causes of
demographic behavior including fertility, marriage, and labor supply,
and it will discuss the profound changes in family life that have
accompanied modern economic growth. A key goal is training students to
obtain, examine, and interpret demographic and economic data in order
to guide new business strategies, inform policy, or contribute to
knowledge.
